In Year 5 this week, we have been learning about Ramadan, Eid and the Hajj, as part of our whole school Islam day. We learnt that Ramadan is a special month for Muslims, where they fast between sunrise and sunset. It is a time of giving and prayer and we designed our own Ramadan money boxes to show the importance of giving to charity during this time. Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitur, where Muslims celebrate by giving cards, gifts and sharing feasts. We made Eid al-Fitur cards that could be given during this special festival.
We also learnt about the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is the Fifth Pillar of Islam. It is a time for Muslims to be close to Allah and the prophets, through prayer and sacrifice. We discovered one of the most important parts of the pilgrimage is walking around the Kabba, believed to be the holy house. The Hajj has several stages and we showed our understanding by illustrating each stage of the pilgrimage.
