ART
INTENT:
Art is a thriving subject at St. Lawrence’s, and one of many areas in our curriculum that helps our children express and develop their creativity. We pride ourselves on our partnerships with outside art organisations, and use these links to further the pupils’ exposure to the Arts. Pupils are given the opportunity to use as many different types of materials and media as possible, and their work is celebrated in displays throughout the school.
First and foremost we intend that pupils have the opportunity to express themselves creatively, and develop their skills and confidence through experimentation with artistic materials and ideas. We endeavour to give the children experience of as wide a range of media as possible and to open their minds to the work of a variety of artists from different eras.
IMPLEMENTATION:
The Art curriculum is skills based, and every year pupils are given the opportunity to further skills learnt in previous years. Art is studied every week across KS1 and KS2 on a half termly basis. These topics alternate with DT topics. Pupils use their Art Portfolios to experiment with different types of media and practise different skill sets. Where it is not possible for pupils to do their work in their portfolios, as is the case with sculpture, teachers endeavour to take photos of the pupils’ work. Each topic draws influence from an artist and pupils are given the opportunity to imitate and respond to the artist’s work. This work is enriched by visits from artists and visits to art galleries where appropriate.
IMPACT:
By the time children leave St. Lawrence’s they will have had experience of drawing, painting and sculpting with a range of media such as clay, pencil, charcoal and watercolour. They will have learnt and revisited a wide range of skills, and been given the space to make mistakes, learn from these and improve. As such, pupils leave St. Lawrence’s with a level of confidence in their artist ability, and use this as a springboard for their artistic endeavours at secondary school.
