Y6 Celebration of the Word – Lectio Divina

As the conclusion to our RE unit on Sources (in which we learned more about the structure and genres of and the church’s teachings about the Bible) we planned a Celebration of the Word using the principles of Lectio Divina, a form of Scriptural meditation practised for centuries by priests and members of religious orders. We chose as our scripture Sunday’s Gospel reading, and using a background of Gregorian chant and darkness, meditated on the reading using a combination of mindful doodling, silence, and guided reflection. At the conclusion of our Celebration of the Word we thought about how we could take the Gospel message and these moments of calm reflection and make them part of our daily lives.

In evaluating our Celebration, we suggested that perhaps next time we could add a candle to our focal area to represent Jesus as the Light of the World.
