A taste of the Caribbean

This week, Year 6 have started to look at a new book: ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin.

This book is a true story celebrating the life of Floella, who was born in Trinidad. Floella migrated to England in 1960 as part of the Windrush generation. In the first few chapters of the book, Floella describes her hometown and the beaches nearby.

Today we transported ourselves to the Caribbean by watching videos of a Trinidadian beach and listening to the sounds. We tried some of the foods and drinks mentioned in the book including watermelon, coconut, limeade and coconut water. This helped us to think about the smells and tastes that we could include in our writing and describe them with powerful adjectives.

We also listened to some music that is popular in Trinidad including steel pan drums and calypso music. We listened to Trindadian Calypsonian, Lord Kitchener, who sang ‘London is the place for me’ during his journey on the Empire Windrush and we discussed how this had an influence on British music.
