Festival of Maths 2020

Year 5 were lucky enough to take part in the Festival of Maths 2020 at the Centre for Life. The day began with making balloon animals.  It wasn’t the easiest task (they kept popping!) but we were so pleased with the final result.  Once we had our balloon animals, we had to change the proportions of the model.  To do this, we learnt we had to change the position of where we twisted the balloon.  We made sausage dogs and giraffes!

Our next activity was a code breaker.  We had to solve lots of mathematical puzzles to get the correct answer and find out the location of the safe-house before it was too late! We worked well as a team and showed great resilience when things didn’t go to plan.

Next, we were allowed to explore the Space Zone, which is an interactive exhibition all about space!  We had so much fun pretending to be part of mission control, doing astronaut training and we even presented the weather forecast.  We also had the opportunity to learn more about climate change in the Sphere and how to navigate the night sky in the planetarium.

We also participated in a rocket building workshop called Space Launch.  We had to try our best to design the most successful rocket we could and fire it into space.

In the afternoon, we took part in two code-breaking activities, a murder mystery and I’m a Celeb.  We worked hard together, playing to our strengths and successfully cracked the code.

We had a fantastic, jam-packed day filled with lots of fun maths activities!
