Building Bridges

Year 6 had an interesting day building bridges and creating impressive displays about some of the World’s greatest engineers.

Pupils spent the morning, as part of the school’s partnership with Intouniversity, learning about different types of bridges and looking at those that span the Tyne.

They then used recycling to create their own structures and demonstrate what they had learnt from different engineers.

In the afternoon they created visual displays based on their chosen engineers: : Brunel who designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge; Eva Lovelace whose calculations helped inspire the 1st computers; Mae Jemison the 1st African American woman in space and American Yuan-Cheng Fung, the founder of biomechanics.

The week long project – which includes a visit to Newcastle University – is designed to show Year 6 the opportunities that are available  for them after college.
