Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Reception has been full of excitement, curiosity, and a little bit of porridge! Our focus story was the classic tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

We began the week by reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children loved joining in with the repeated phrases like “Someone’s been sitting in my chair!” and “This porridge is just right!” We talked about the characters, setting, and the important message about making good choices and respecting others’ things.

Later in the week, we explored an alternative version of the story by Micheal Rosen —Goldilocks and the Three Crocodiles. The children were fascinated by the new setting and characters, and it sparked lots of imaginative thinking. Inspired by the story, they created their own front covers for their very own versions of the tale. We saw everything from Goldilocks and the Three Hedgehogs to Goldilocks and the Three Sheep! Their creativity and storytelling ideas were truly amazing.

In Maths, we explored the concept of size and ordering. One of the highlights was a hands-on challenge where the children-built chairs of three different sizes using cubes—just like the ones in the story! They carefully counted and compared the number of cubes used, and worked together to make sure each chair was “just right” for each bear.

We also had a wonderful time experimenting with porridge oats. The children mixed oats with water and observed how the consistency changed—from dry and crumbly to soft and sticky! They described the textures using words like “gooey,” “slimy,” and “squishy,” and made predictions about what would happen when more water was added. It was a fantastic way to explore early science skills through play.
