George Stephenson – the father of the railway!

We are really enjoying our Victorians topic in Humanities! Today we learnt all about a significant Victorian the inventor and engineer, George Stephenson. He is often called the ‘father of the railway,’ and was born locally in Northumberland. We opened up his suitcase and started to think about who he was and why he is famous. We worked in groups and thought of our own questions and ideas about him. We were particularly interested in his education and how he became an engineer. We found out that he is extra special as he was a pioneer of British engineering but also a local hero!
