<p>This week in Year 2 we have been thinking about feelings. We have based our work around the book Ruby&#8217;s Worry by Tom Percival. This book has helped us think about our feelings and work out what to do when we are worried. In our Literacy lessons we have worked on our prediction skills. We [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Since returning to school In September, the children in Year 1 have been talking a lot about themselves and how special they are in the world. They focused on the book, &#8216;Here We Are&#8217; by Oliver Jeffers and produced artwork and pieces of writing based upon the story. What a fabulous job they did!</p>

<p>This week a number of Year 1 pupils returned to school after a 12 week period of home learning. They were all so pleased to see some of their friends again and begin learning in school. Year 1 have completed some super Literacy and Maths activities in their Year 1  bubbles. Lots of our activities [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Year 2 have continued to work really hard during their time at home and they have been sending in some lovely photographs. This week we have been reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson. All of our Literacy work this week has been linked to this text and the children [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Well done to Year 2 for their hard work over the past two weeks. Here are some of the activities which the children have been completing; Fabulous Rainbows! Year 2 were asked to make a poster showing a message to their friends. Art work and model making. Literacy and Maths activities History work; finding out [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Year 6 were incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to see &#8216;Holes&#8217; at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle.  This is the text we have been studying this term.  This is what some children had to say about it&#8230; &#8216;The acting was excellent &#8211; I loved the characters.&#8217; &#8216;The funniest part was when Stanley was in [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Year 1 and Year 2 have completed a two week handwriting challenge to improve their handwriting. Well done to all boys and girls for their hard work. Prizes were awarded to 2 children from each class who had shown the biggest improvement.</p>

<p>During this half term Year 2 have really been enjoying reading; The Diary of The Killer Cat by Anne Fine. We found out a little about the author; Anne Fine since this was the first book which we have read in Year 2 by this author. . We made a fact file about Anne Fine. [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Last term, Year 6 studied &#8216;A Christmas Carol&#8217;  by Charles Dickens. Before looking at the actual text, we explored the question: Who was Charles Dickens? We researched his background and considered what life was like for people living in Victorian England.  Dickens was writing during the Industrial Revolution in London and there was a huge contrast [&hellip;]</p>

<p>In Year 3, we have been enjoying reading Hansel and Gretel by Anthony Browne. We split the story into three parts; the beginning, the middle and the ending. We have discussed in small groups the features of a fairytale and how Browne’s version also includes these conventions. Over this topic, we have developed our skills [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Years 1 and 2 invited parents to join them today for a reading workshop. Parents found out about reading in KS 1. Parents were told about how we value reading in school; At St Lawrence’s, we value reading as a key life skill and are fully committed to enabling our children to become competent and [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Year 2 enjoyed taking part in a Hobby Day in school as part  our work about Ourselves. We enjoyed sharing information about our hobbies with the rest of the class and showing our skills. We asked our friends questions about their hobbies. We have really enjoyed learning about our friend&#8217;s hobbies.</p>

<p>Year 4 have been working closely with the Heritage Lottery Fund over the last few months. As a parting gift, they have kindly provided us with a huge selection of books related to World War One.  There is a fantastic mix of fiction and non-fiction to add to our new library stock.  Many thanks to [&hellip;]</p>

<p>World Book Day was on the 7th of March. Year 4 were lucky enough to already have links with two amazing, local authors; Neil Tonge and Peter Hepplewhite. Both authors write historical fiction and non-fiction. Year 4 had a great time discussing what its takes to become a great author and they found out that [&hellip;]</p>

<p>World Book Day 2019 &nbsp; On World Book Day we dressed up as different book characters. &nbsp; &nbsp; We  brought the book where our character is found. We spent the day listening to and talking about stories by different authors. We learnt a lot about the authors. We also enjoyed some quiet reading time. We [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Over the last three weeks there has been a great buzz about spelling across St Lawrence&#8217;s.  The whole school has been avidly learning all of their class spelling lists.  Excitement has grown quickly, as we all participated in many spelling games, competitions and knock out rounds.  Eventually, we held a KS2 Spelling Bee in our [&hellip;]</p>

<p>&nbsp; Today Year 3 enjoyed a fabulous story writing workshop. We worked with a team of writers, illustrators, directors and playwrights to create our own story. We had such a wonderful time and impressed the editor! She even published our booked called, ‘The Magical Cat.’</p>

<p>Year 5 have been working super hard in English lessons this week.  Our writing focus is poetry and we have been exploring &#8216;Twas the Night Before Christmas&#8217;.  Working in groups, we were given the task of memorising, acting out and reciting two verses from the poem to the class. I was super impressed with how well the [&hellip;]</p>

<p>Today we &#8216;officially&#8217; opened our brand new school library.  Mr Brown cut the ribbon, watched by our School Council members and Head Boy and Girl.  Afterwards the children in every class had the opportunity to visit and explore our collection of high quality texts.  All children received sweets and a bookmark to celebrate the opening.  [&hellip;]</p>
