Byker Trust invited all pupils to take part in their annual Christmas card competition. All pupils created their own cards and they were sent to Bijoli at Byker Trust to choose a winner from each class. The standard was incredibly high, but Bijoli and her team were able to pick their winners. Bijoli came to school to announce the winners and give them each a special Santa hat and advent calendar. Thank you to everyone that attented the Christmas Fayre, it was wonderful to see the school hall so full. We hope you all had a lovely time.

So much excitement in Year 5 yesterday afternoon when 2 professional basketball players came in to teach us about taking care of our bodies and how to use exercise as a tool to enhance our physical and mental health. We practiced basketball techniques, asked brilliant questions, got some autographs and reduced tickets for the next game at the Vertu Arena!

On Tuesday 18 November, 17 KS2 pupils took in a special performance at Newcastle Cathedral. As part of an event organised by Newcastle Music Service, we were invited to perform 4 different songs along with 5 other Newcastle schools. The choir sang confidently and beautifully. The whole cathedral was packed with about 400 parents, carers and other pupils. Despite the crowd, the were very few nerves! A teacher from another commented on how beautifully everyone sang.

Year 1 had a special visit from the author Kate Rolfe. She told the children her journey of becoming an author and said that it all began with her love for drawing and then she could add words that match with the pictures. Kate is dyslexic so it was lovely to hear about her story, her experience writing a story and how words appear on a page for her. We were excited to travel by minibus to the farm. Once inside, we enjoyed exploring all the different animals including pigs, goats, sheep, hens, ducks, rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs and many, many more! We all completed an animal treasure hunt and counted how many of each animal we could see. We listened carefully to the noises the animals make and identified which sounds belonged to which animals. Our School Council organised a day of fun to celebrate Children in Need. The children were invited to come into school dressed in their own clothes, Pudsey clothes, spots or pyjamas for a small donation. Lots of fun was had by all in raising money for this very important charity.

To celebrate Anti-Bullying Week in school, the School Council got together to make posters advertising 'Odd Socks Day'. This is an event that we take part in every year. The children all wore odd socks to remind us that we are all unique and should celebrate our differences.

This week we explored circles and triangles through the inspiring work of artist Wassily Kandinsky. The children loved creating their own Kandinsky-style art using loose parts and even experimented with 3D art. It was fantastic to see them noticing shapes in their designs and talking about how circles and triangles can make beautiful patterns.

We have been working on our prior knowledge of using a Glockenspiel. We are focusing on the notes G, C, A. We perfected the starter track and then quickly moved on to playing Bruno Mars, You can count on me.  Year 5 working with the Glockenspiel

St Lawrence's took part in a Remembrance Day assembly this morning. All pupils were given a paper poppy which was purchased by school. All pupils also had the opportunity to buy items from the Poppy Appeal, including pencils, bag chains and snap bands. In their French lesson this week, Year 6 learned how France celebrates Remembrance Day, and that they use a mix of poppies and cornflowers. Our wreath reflects the two colours. On Monday 10 November, 15 Year 6 pupils were given the opportunity to attend a special workshop at The Lighthouse Project.  It is all part of the Enchanted City project run by Newcastle City Council where there will be a variety of art installations across the city. The pupils created paper artwork, inspired by the artist Kate Eccles. They made feathers, birds and stars, all with the view to creating shadow pictures.

On Thursday 6 November, pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 and took part in the Big Draw at The Lighthouse Project. The Big Draw is a charity that champions drawing and creativity as a way to bring people together.  Ringtons are a sponsor for this year’s festival, alongside the National Trust and a few others. As part of the sponsorship, they are running art sessions with the final piece being featured in the Ringtons annual diary and on some of the Ringtons vans.  Each class worked a

This week, our Reception children have been busy exploring the world of materials! From wood to metal, fabric to bricks, we’ve been learning all about the different materials that make up the world around us. To kick off our learning, the children went on a material hunt around school. They spotted wooden tables, metal gates, plastic pots fabric cushions, and even brick walls! Reception children had a magical afternoon exploring autumn during a special experience at The Lighthouse Project.  We began by collecting leaves of all shapes, sizes, and colours—from fiery reds to golden yellows and crunchy browns. The children were fascinated by the variety and loved comparing their finds with friends. It was a brilliant opportunity to talk about seasonal changes and observe the signs of autumn all around us. Year 3 have enjoyed reading their new class book ‘The Pebble in my Pocket’. They began by going into the playground to find their own pebble. They then wrote a description of it including some exciting adjectives. Next, they read the description of a volcanic eruption from the book and developed their comprehension skills by answering vocabulary, retrieval and summarising questions.

This week Year 3 began their new Science topic ‘Rocks and Soils’. The children found out about the components of soil and labelled a pie chart. They then considered which component was the most important: mineral matter, water, air or organic matter. Later, they went outside to play ‘Soil I-Spy’. In pairs they looked for worms, rocks and decomposing leaves.

Year 1 planned and had a class liturgy for the end of their Baptism topic in RE this week. We chose a reading from Mark's Gospel about Jesus' own Baptism and as a class, we danced a liturgical dance to the 'Our Father.' It was a lovely way to celebrate the end of our topic and remember and share our learning and think about how we could go forth and share the message with our families.

Year 5 have been working on multiplying by 10,100,1000 this week and have worked in different groups with different teachers. We have all successfully reached our own learning goals!
