Reception children had a magical afternoon exploring autumn during a special experience at The Lighthouse Project.  We began by collecting leaves of all shapes, sizes, and colours—from fiery reds to golden yellows and crunchy browns. The children were fascinated by the variety and loved comparing their finds with friends. It was a brilliant opportunity to talk about seasonal changes and observe the signs of autumn all around us. This week Year 3 began their new Science topic ‘Rocks and Soils’. The children found out about the components of soil and labelled a pie chart. They then considered which component was the most important: mineral matter, water, air or organic matter. Later, they went outside to play ‘Soil I-Spy’. In pairs they looked for worms, rocks and decomposing leaves.

This week, our Reception children truly impressed us with their phonics skills and lovely writing! As part of our autumn theme, the children explored seasonal objects like leaves, conkers, and pinecones, and used their phonics knowledge to identify and record the initial sounds of each one. It was wonderful to see them confidently writing sounds like l for leaf  and c for conker . We’ve also been working hard on: Pencil grip Pressure control  Letter formation  We are so proud
